Jantar Mantar
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II had become the ruler of Amer at the young age of 11 in 1699 AD after his father’s demise. Since childhood, he had deep interest in astronomy, mathematics and architecture.
During his reign, astronomical observatories were built at Jaipur, Delhi, Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura.
‘Jantar’ is derived from the word ‘Yantra’ which means instrument and ‘Mantra’ means formulae or calculations.
Jantar Mantar built at the given five cities are comprehensive astronomical observatories designed for the observation of astronomical objects and their positions with the naked eye. They embody several architectural and instrumental innovations.
Built in early 18th century, Jantar Mantar at Jaipur is the biggest and best preserved of all the observatories in India and is a UNESCO World heritage site.
