Pillar Rocks

‘Pillar rocks’ is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kodaikanal.

A 400Ft high vertical column of 3 rocks, Pillar rocks is one of the popular tourist attractions and a favourite picnic spot in Kodaikanal. Managed by Tamil Nadu Forest department, Pillar rocks is crowded throughout the year but not much commercialised.

Locals call the spot ‘Pillayar’ meaning ‘Lord Ganesha’ in local language and claim that the rocks represent Him.

If you explore closely, the dark deep chambers between the rock pillars are inhabited by bats and perhaps aptly named ‘Devil’s Kitchen’.

One can also take a short steep trek up round the hill side to get to the top of the rocks.

A notable feature is a cross which was hoisted upon the rocks by an English adventurer. During peak season, small telescopes or binoculars can be rented from the hawkers at the site who will readily point out the cross for you.

The best time to visit Pillar rocks is in the noon since opaque mist settles around in mornings and evenings camouflaging the entire area.
