Batasia Loop

About 5 Km from Darjeeling is a massive spiral railway loop, called Batasia Loop.

Here, the track spirals through a tunnel and over a hill-top. The loop was constructed to lower the otherwise steep gradient of ascent of the railway.

Batasia loop offers a magnificent 360 degree view of the beautiful surroundings.

 

Chowrasta

Chowrasta or the Darjeeling Mall is the heart of the town and the most happening place in Darjeeling.

Chowrasta means the crossroads, the junction where four roads meet. Chowrasta in Darjeeling is a nice flat land where both tourists and locals to simply lounge in the sun and absorb the mesmerising views around.

It being the centre of all commercial activities in Darjeeling, Chowrasta offers many shopping options and is the main shopping area.

With restaurants and old heritage stores lined up on one side and magnificent views of wide expanse on the other, Chowrasta compels one and all to spend some good time here and conjure up everlasting memories.

To add some spice to the sweet moments is a small open-air auditorium located here. Several local rock bands often perform here to add to the thrill of the tourists.

 

 Tiger Hill

11 Km from the main town is the highest point in Darjeeling, popularly known as Tiger Hill. Standing tall at 8482 Ft, Tiger Hill is known for the mesmerising sunrise views it offers.

The panoramic views of the sun rising over a range of snow-capped mountains are simply breath-taking and worth every effort made to reach the sunrise point in time.

Hotels in Darjeeling generally arrange trips to the Tiger hill for sunrise views. Normally the pickup time from the hotel is around 4 AM and it takes about 40 minutes to reach the sunrise point by car. One must endeavour to leave in time to be able to get a vantage point striking views and amazing clicks.

Close to the sunrise point on the Tiger Hill is situated a temple dedicated to the local goddess. One can also enjoy a cup of hot tea and breakfast sold by the locals around.

 

Tips:

1. Tiger hill is considerably higher and colder than Darjeeling. Hence, it’s advisable to carry warm clothes along.

2. Best time to witness the sunrise is in summers as it is usually cloudy and foggy in winters.
